Ashton's Diary - Sep 2020 Part 2

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

September second half

Chantelle Burns Nanny : 30/09/20 Video 1 - Biggest/smallest/tallest/shortest (mathematic concepts - size and height)

Goal - to select the item that is the biggest/smallest/tallest/shortest.

Outcome - Today Ashton needed to select items based on size and height. The first question required Ashton to select the biggest piece of fruit on each line. Ashton was able to do this, however he was being cheeky at first. Next Ashton needed to select the smallest vegetable on each line. Again Ashton was able to go this and he even went back to select the smallest fruit and the biggest vegetable (this was his own idea). After that we moved onto the height questions. The first question covered the tallest items and the second question covered the shortest items. Ashton did an excellent job and selected all items correctly. Previously Ashton wasn't always able to select the correct option and now he can. Great job Ashton on achieving this goal.

[30/9/20, 5:57:52 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 30/09/20 Video 2 - Cutting with scissors (fine motor)

Goal - to cut paper hair (along lines) whilst holding scissors correctly.

Outcome - Today we did some more crazy hair cutting, this time I only did four strips of hair as I included zig zag and wavy lines. Ashton held his scissors correctly for the most part, however when it came to cutting the zig zag and wavy lines he basically just cut down the middle. Using this resource is a great way to engage Ashton when it comes to cutting paper as he doesn't usually show interest in cutting lines on paper. Overall Ashton did well with holding the scissors, but needs to continue practicing cutting along zig zag and wavy lines.

[30/9/20, 5:59:25 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 30/09/20 Video 3 - Read and retell

Goal - to place the magnet sea creatures onto the scenery board to retell the story in the book.

Outcome - Today I read an ocean story to Ashton and each page had directions on where to put a sea creature. Ashton had to follow these directions to recall and retell the story on the scenery board. Ashton was able to follow along and place the sea creatures in the correct spot. At the end Ashton decided to use the magnets to make a Megasword character and he did an excellent job. I asked Ashton to tell me where the arms, legs and body (etc) were and he was able to do so.

[30/9/20, 6:01:20 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 30/09/20 Video 4 - Pink Oatmeal (basket ball week) sports yoga - to increase overall flexibility and muscle strength.

[27/9/20, 3:30:01 pm] Sky Nanny:

social interaction

I was playing tag with Ashton in the playground. A child asked to join. His name was James. I asked Ashton, can James play too. Ashton replied, "yes".

I told James what we were playing, he proceeded to join Ashton on the climbing frames. Ashton and James ran back and forth away from my hands. Ashton then noticed James was missing a tooth. Mentioning, "you have a missing tooth too!" Ashton then showed James his own missing tooth. I continued to try tag the boys as they ran away together.

Ashton mentioned, "let's go to the plane", while grabbing James hand. Together they jumped and ran to the plane to get away from me. James instructed Ashton to go one way and James went the other way to escape me. Ashton followed James instructions and jumped out of the left side of the plane. They ran around the climbing frames and back onto the top of the climbing frames. Ashton grabbed James hand and said, quick let's get away". James mentioned, "let's go this way". Together the boys ran back to the plane.

I mentioned to the boys I have grown wings and I am going to fly over to get them. Ashton jumped off the plane and said, "I'm going to pull your wings off", as he pretended to pull them off my back.

James replied, quick let's get away. The boys continued to work together to escape me. James then proceeded to run up the slide, Ashton wanted to follow. "I need help", he mentioned. I said to James, can you reach your hand to him and pull him up. I instructed to Ashton to reach his hand up. James grabbed onto Ashton hand and proceeded to pull him up the slide, as I supported Ashton's hips. The boys continued to play this game for 30min.

When the game finished, Ashton said goodbye to James and gave him a cuddle.

[27/9/20, 3:30:36 pm] Sky Nanny: Notes from Ashton's park visit with me this afternoon. It was so beautiful to see. Sorry I didn't video

[27/9/20, 5:36:06 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 27/09/20 Video 1 - Which one is different?

Goal - to select which vehicle is different out of the three options presented.

Outcome - When we first began this activity Ashton was being cheeky and not focusing on the task, he was giggling and making jokes. I presented Ashton with the first card, he was able to identify that the ambulance was the different vehicle and he placed the peg onto it. Once Ashton had completed the first card he got up and ran away, but I quickly got him back to the table. We proceeded with a few more cards and Ashton got the correct answer each time. Nearing the end of my first planned activity Ashton heard his Dad, he wanted to go and see him. This concluded my activity session. I let Ashton enjoy playing for the rest of the morning.

In the afternoon Ashton went to the park with Skye.

[26/9/20, 5:43:28 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 26/09/20 Video 1 - Fishing match

Goal - to take turns playing fishing memory match and remember where the different coloured fish are hidden. (identifying colours and counting)

Outcome - I took my turn first to start off this game so Ashton knew what we were playing. As soon as I had my turn Ashton asked for his turn, he continued to rush ahead and take another turn so I reminded him I needed a turn. Ashton found two matches during our game, I asked him to count up how many he had, instead of doing that he asked to combine all of the fish so I let him. Eventually Ashton counted up all the fish. Ashton than decided to remove each fish one at a time (he would say and one swam away whilst moving the fish to the side) and he was able to tell me how many fish were left each time.

[26/9/20, 5:46:45 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 26/09/20 Video 2 - Match and spell

Goal - to match the letters to the word on the picture card (practising letter recognition and sounds)

Outcome - When we first started this activity Ashton was being funny saying no and I was saying yes. Eventually I was able to get Ashton to identify the picture on the card, he told me it was a cat. Next I asked Ashton to find the matching letters to place onto the card and he was able to do so. I sounded out the letters and pointed to each one, Ashton pointed along with me. We moved onto the next card which was rat and initially Ashton placed on the incorrect letters, he also asked me to come and stand next to him. I took off the incorrect letters and got Ashton to identify the picture. Ashton eventually placed on the correct letters for rat and again I sounded out the letters, this time Ashton repeated the sounds. I had told Ashton we could finish after this card as he was a little agitated earlier, I did try to do the final card I had planned, but Ashton said we were finished.

[26/9/20, 5:54:01 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 26/09/20 Video 3 - Time 4 Learning (number)

Goal - to order numbers 1 - 5. To match numbers to their corresponding picture, for example the number 5 will be matched to the picture with 5 cars. (number recognition, ordering and matching)

Outcome - Today Ashton needed to order the numbers one to five starting with number one. Initially Ashton was being cheeky and placed the numbers onto the incorrect line. Ashton did this for awhile until I placed the number one in the correct spot. From that point Ashton was able to order the numbers correctly. During this task Ashton was a little frustrated with using the mouse as he was having trouble dragging the numbers. Next I chose a matching activity for Ashton to complete. It took Ashton a few attempts to complete this ordering task, but he eventually got there in the end.

[25/9/20, 7:59:12 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 25/09/20 Video 1 - Math (acc)

Goal - to trace the correct number and cross out the incorrect number.

Outcome - Ashton needed encouragement to begin his math sheet today (as we know it's not his favourite task). I was able to get Ashton started by taking turns at placing the blocks onto the worksheet. Ashton went to give up, but I encouraged him to continue by offering to count the blocks for him. As I started to count the blocks Ashton joined in. We were able to complete the worksheet page together and I didn't push things any further as I didn't want Ashton getting too upset.

[25/9/20, 8:01:34 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 25/09/20 Video 2 - Letter 'O' play dough mats/tracing

Goal - letter recognition, to recognise the letter 'O', make the sound, discuss words that start with 'O' and trace the letter (both upper and lowercase) (fine motor skills to build up muscles in fingers in preparation for writing with a pencil).

Outcome - Ashton was able to identify the letter 'o' in both its upper and lowercase form. I asked Ashton to trace the letters and he was able to do so (I made sure he held his marker correctly). Next Ashton used play dough to make the letters and his technique showed excellent thinking and movement of his pincer grip as he was pulling and stretching the play dough to form the letters. At the end I asked Ashton what letter octopus and orange started with and he was able to say 'o'.

[25/9/20, 8:02:47 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 25/09/20 Video 3 - Veggie Farm

Goal - to place veggies onto the patch based on number or colour. (number and colour recognition and counting)

Outcome - When we first started this activity Ashton had his own agenda and wanted to fill the veggie patch in his own way. I was able to bring him back on track (throughout the activity) and got him to follow the cards I had set up for the activity. Ashton was able to place the veggies onto the patch based on the number or colour listed on the card (under my instruction to keep him on task).

[25/9/20, 8:03:40 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 25/09/20 Video 4 - Time 4 Learning (ABC)

Goal - to match letter pairs (memory match). To match letters to their corresponding picture, for example Q is for queen and so on. (letter recognition)

Outcome - Today I selected the ABC section on Time 4 Learning. I had originally selected the matching activity, but Ashton clicked onto memory match so we did that first. As usual Ashton did a great job at remembering where the letters were. Next I clicked on the letter matching activity and Ashton wasn't as keen for this one. I gave him some encouragement and assistance where needed and he was able to complete the activity. It took Ashton a few attempts to match the letters to their corresponding word.

[25/9/20, 8:07:09 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 25/09/20 Video 5 Making statues

Goal - to make statues when the music stops. (gross motor)

Outcome - I asked Ashton if he wanted to play musical statues with his sisters to finish off his activity session this morning and he said yes. I took Ashton to ask his sisters to join us. I asked Ashton if he would like to dance to the song, Timber and he said yes. Today Ashton needed lots of reminding to join in and make statues. When Ashton made his statues he wasn't freezing like he usually does, I think he was a bit distracted by his Godzilla toys.

[24/9/20, 5:34:30 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 24/09/20 Video 1 - I see book

Goal - to identify the gender of the person (noun he/she) and what he or she is doing (verb).

Outcome - Ashton needed encouragement to get started with this activity. At first Ashton was joking around and saying that the person was a boy instead of a girl and that they were doing a different action. It was clear Ashton was joking around and having fun. Ashton was able to identify he/she and each action.

[24/9/20, 5:49:26 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 24/09/20 Video 2 - Letter 'T' play dough mats/tracing

Goal - letter recognition, to recognise the letter 'T', make the sound, discuss words that start with 'T' and trace the letter (both upper and lowercase) (fine motor skills to build up muscles in fingers in preparation for writing with a pencil).

Outcome - Ashton was able to identify the letter 'T' (both upper and lowercase). I spoke about words that started with 'T', for example, turtle and transformer (I had physical props for this). The first thing I got Ashton to do was use a whiteboard marker to trace the uppercase letter (he repeated this for lowercase as well), which he did successfully. Next Ashton used play dough to make the letters (he was able to roll and stretch the play dough to make both the upper and lowercase letters). At the end I asked him what letter turtle and transformer starts with and he was able to respond correctly and said they start with 'T'.

[24/9/20, 5:55:37 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 24/09/20 Video 3 - Time 4 Learning (insects)

Goal - to order the insects from largest to smallest. To complete the insect pattern.

Outcome - Today we explored the insects section on Time 4 Learning. Our first task was ordering insects from largest to smallest. It took Ashton a few attempts to get the order correct and I needed to assist him at times. Next we did insect patterns and Ashton needed to select the missing insect to complete the pattern, he was presented with two choices. Most times Ashton would select the incorrect option first before finally selecting the correct one. I think Ashton knew the correct answer, but was selecting the incorrect one.

[23/9/20, 8:11:23 pm] Sammy Nanny: 23/09/20

Video 1 - positional words

Goal - to listen to the instructions and complete the directions independently

Outcome - Ashton was being cheeky throughout the activity, I eventually showed him the back of each card to show Ashton where they needed to be placed.

Outcome - Ashton is able to identify each of the pictures feelings, he is able to understand that when he gets hurt he is sad. He loves to get tickled by the tickle monster because it makes him happy. As soon as Ashton sees the picture of the sleepy boy, he also wants to go to sleep too, that’s Ashton’s way of telling me that he has finished the activity.

Video 1,2 - number identification

Goal - to use the paint on his fingers to count out how many finger prints needed to complete the body of the caterpillar

Outcome - I didn’t press record properly so the first part wasn’t on film. First we watched a number song from 1-20. First I used a worksheet with 4 monsters that needed eyes added to them. The worksheet showed the amount of how many eyes each monster needed (1-4), Ashton was able to complete this worksheet independently. He needed some assistance with the caterpillar worksheet as they were the numbers 10-13 and were still working on recognising those numbers.

[22/9/20, 8:43:07 pm] Sammy Nanny: 21/09/20

Video 3 - making slime

Goal - to follow instructions to eventually create slime

Outcome - Ashton was able to follow all instructions to make the slime independently, he enjoyed watching the glue fall from the bottle. He showed a lot of interest in the dry glue that he could peel off his skin.

[19/9/20, 5:15:10 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 19/09/20 Video 1 - Circle the correct answer

Goal - to circle the items that are hot and the items that are cold.

Outcome - Ashton was pretty cheeky during this activity, I needed him to circle the hot items and than the cold items. At first Ashton was picking the hot items out, but than he began to draw on all the items. I wanted to repeat the hot items again to see if Ashton could do the task properly. I ended up modelling the activity and Ashton was able to find the last hot item. Next we moved onto the cold items and Ashton was being funny marking the hot items instead of the cold ones. Ashton ended up asking me to stand next to him, so I did and we ended up finishing the task together whilst Ashton was giggling. I believe Ashton knew the answers, but he loves to have a bit of fun when we do these types of activities.

[19/9/20, 5:16:40 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 19/09/20 Video 2 - Time 4 Learning (abc and shapes)

Goal - to match letter pairs. To match shapes with everyday objects that are the same shape.

Outcome - Ashton did a great job with the letter memory match today, he showed great recall when it came to remembering where the letters were. During this task Ashton showed excellent control when using the computer mouse. Next we selected a shapes matching activity. Ashton needed to match shapes to their everyday items, for example the circle matches to the ball and so on. Ashton made a few errors, but he was able to immediately correct them on his next try. Again Ashton did an excellent job with the mouse and the activities overall.

[19/9/20, 5:18:25 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 19/09/20 Video 3 - Yoga balls/sight words

Goal - to build up core strength whilst learning sight words.

Outcome - Today we repeated the yoga ball/sight words game with Ashton and his sisters. Anastasia had a turn first and did an excellent job. Next up it was Ashton's turn and he needed a little assistance today from Emilie when it came to balancing on the yoga ball. Ashton was able to grab the word out of the bowl and than Giselle and Scarlett had their turns (Scarlett didn't hop on the yoga ball due to her arm). Each child was able to grab a word and Ashton ended up having a second turn. When Ashton grabbed his word we would tell him what is was and get him to repeat it.

[19/9/20, 5:19:49 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 19/09/20 Video 4 - Pink oatmeal (spring week) digital spring theme game - improve flexibility, core strength and balance.

18:9/20

18/09/20 Video 1 - Letter 'S' play dough mats

Goal - letter recognition, to recognise the letter 's', make the sound and discuss words that start with 's'. (fine motor skills - to build up muscles in fingers in preparation for writing with a pencil)

Outcome - Ashton wasn't overly keen to participate at first, however I was able to make him laugh and turn things around. Initially Ashton wanted to play with the animals (I had them as concrete visuals because they start with 's'), but I let him know that he needed to complete the activity first. I placed the animals aside after he labelled all of them and asked him to identify the letter we were learning. At first Ashton laughed and said it was the letter 'g' so I asked him again, he was able to identity the letter as 's'. Next we rolled the play dough to create our upper and lower case letters. Ashton asked for some assistance, he wanted me to help him roll his play dough (so I helped him). I also gave Ashton a tip, to stretch out the play dough to help make the letter and he was able to do this successfully (this action promotes the us of his pincer grip which will aid in his ability to grasp a pencil correctly). Overall Ashton enjoyed this experience even though he wasn't initially excited about it.

[18/9/20, 7:53:19 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 18/09/20 Video 2 - Math (acc)

Goal - to trace the correct number and cross out the incorrect number.

Outcome - Ashton was more interested in playing with the counter blocks than the actual activity. First I followed Ashton's lead and interacted with him hoping it would eventuate in the task being started. At one point Ashton got up and left the table, he was telling me he was finished, however I was able to get him to come back and do two of the math questions with my assistance.

[18/9/20, 7:55:45 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 18/09/20 Video 3 - Yoga balls/sight words

Goal - to build up core strength whilst learning sight words.

Outcome - For this activity Ashton needed to lay on the yoga ball and roll forwards to grab the sight words. Giselle took her turn first and grabbed a sight word out of the bowl. I wanted Ashton to see the word, but he was busy rolling around on the ball. Eventually Ashton grabbed the word from Giselle, however we tossed it away (several times). I decided to use this moment to explore emotions and I got Giselle to convey that she was frustrated. In the end Ashton gave Giselle back her word and asked for his own word. Initially Ashton wasn't grabbing the word from the bowl and he was just rolling on the yoga ball. I ended up saying the word had to be rescued before siren head (a character that Ashton likes) got it and this gave Ashton the motivation he needed to grab the word.

Goal - to cut paper hair (along lines) whilst holding scissors correctly.

Outcome - As this hair cutting activity started Ashton asked for Emilie, so I decided we should name our plastic plate Emilie. Ashton was able to cut along the lines sometimes during this activity, other times he would cut in between the lines. Occasionally I had to adjust Ashton's hand position, but overall he held his scissors correctly and did a great job cutting the paper hair. At the end Ashton wanted to show Emilie that he had cut her hair. Ashton followed my instructions to knock on the playroom door, once inside he showed/told Emilie that he had cut her hair (he was smiling and seemed proud of his efforts).

[16/9/20, 6:00:11 pm] Chantelle Burns Nanny : 16/09/20 Video 2 - Sticker book

Outcome - Ashton selected the first activity (find it) and he had to select the correct school supply item out of four options. For the most part Ashton was able to select the correct item on either the first or second try. The next activity that Ashton did was matching. Ashton did an excellent job at finding the matching pairs. Once Ashton had completed these two activities I let him do some colouring mixing as a reward.

Video 2 - time 4 learning shapes

Goal - syllables and sequencing

Outcome - Ashton chose to do syllables today, the activity showed us how many syllables are in certain words. We then moved onto sequencing, Ashton he able to complete each sequence however at times he is quick to just click on a shape.
